How to choose the right size diapers for your baby?

18/04/2025

Disposable diapers are a basic item on every baby's layette list. Babies are not yet able to communicate their physiological needs. They can only control them at around 2 years of age. To avoid wet clothes, we put disposable diapers on babies, which come in different sizes. Can choosing the right size diaper for a baby be problematic? Sometimes they are not properly fitted to the baby's weight. So how can you avoid making a mistake?

What size diapers should you buy for a newborn?

Where to start, what sizes are best for beginners? It depends, of course. The size of the baby at birth is very important. Differences in the size of newborns can be really big. On average, a newborn weighs 3-3.5 kg, but there are also babies weighing 2 kg and even 5 kg.

When it comes to newborns, size 1, or mini, diapers are the best choice. They are designed for babies weighing 2-4 kg, sometimes up to 5 kg, depending on the manufacturer. However, it is important to pay attention to the design of the diapers. Although they are designed for newborns, they can vary in size, which ultimately affects their comfort and tightness.

What about the size of diapers for a baby who was born prematurely and weighs significantly less? Yes, babies are born at different stages of development. Premature babies weigh significantly less than babies born at term. Often, they do not even reach 2 kg. What then, what size diapers should you choose for a baby with such a low weight?

Special size 0 diapers are designed for premature babies with a birth weight of less than 2 kg. They are even smaller than mini diapers. Until recently, they were rare, but now there are more and more disposable size 0 diapers available on the market.

How to match the size of diapers to age?

Are you wondering how to match the size of diapers to your child's age? Some parents base their choice on how old their baby is in months. However, the best method is to match the size of diapers for your baby to their weight. A general size scale has been adopted:

· Size 1 – weight 2-5 kg

· Size 2 – weight 4-8 kg

· Size 3 – weight 6-10 kg

· Size 4 – weight 9-14 kg

· Size 4+ - weight 10-15 kg

· Size 5 – weight 11-16 kg

· Size 6 – weight 13-18 kg

Of course, a lot depends on the manufacturer, who has the right to determine their own size scale for baby diapers. The packaging always includes information about the size of the diapers and the weight range for which they are intended.

When it comes to the size of Bambiboo diapers for babies, we use the following scale:

· Size 1 – weight 2-4 kg

· Size 2 – weight 3-8 kg

· Size 3 – weight 6-11 kg

· Size 4 – weight 9-14 kg

· Size 5 – weight 12-17 kg

· Size 6 – weight 15+ kg

Can the age of the child be helpful in choosing the right size of diapers for a baby? Yes, we can use this as a guide, but the child's weight is definitely a better measure for choosing the size of diapers. A newborn will wear size 1 or 2, and size 3 diapers may already be suitable for a 3-month-old baby. Size 4 is most often chosen by parents of babies aged 6-12 months. After a year, in most cases, children wear size 5 diapers, and older children wear size 6.

How do you know if the diaper size for your baby is right?

The best indicator of whether the diaper size for your baby is right is whether the diaper absorbs moisture well and does not leak. If the clothes are wet, it means that the diaper is too big or too small. If the diapers are too small, you may also have difficulty fastening them, and red spots and rashes may appear on the legs due to the diaper being too tight. It is also worth checking that the diaper is not too tight around the tummy. We recommend that the diaper fits snugly against the child's body, but is not too tight. A perfectly fitting diaper is one where you can fit two fingers under the edge.

When choosing the size of diapers for your baby, follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Always check the weight range for which the product is intended. This will help you avoid unpleasant surprises in the form of leaking diapers. And importantly, a well-fitting diaper is also comfortable for your baby.
