Every parent is familiar with diapers. Hundreds of diapers are used in the first few months of life, as babies are not yet able to signal their physiological needs. Diaper pants are also very popular with parents. They have their supporters and opponents; some cannot imagine everyday life with a one-year-old without them, while others are completely indifferent to them. Which is better—standard diapers or diaper pants?
What are diaper pants, anyway?
Diaper pants serve the same purpose as regular disposable diapers for babies. They are designed to prevent wet clothes when the baby is not yet able to control its physiological needs. Their most important features are good absorbency, comfort, breathability, and a pleasant feel.
However, diaper pants, e.g., those with a bamboo cover, are put on differently than conventional diapers. They have no fasteners and are similar in design to underwear. They are pulled over the body and have elastic bands at the waist and legs for a better fit. The pantsy are taken off like normal underwear, i.e., over the legs. Some parents tear them open at the sides so that the underwear does not have to be taken off.
Pantsy for older children
Diaper pants are a good choice, but not for every child. The age and abilities of the child are decisive here. Pantsy are ideal for lively and already mobile toddlers who are hard to keep up with. Diaper pants are also easier to take off and put on under extreme conditions. The perfect time to switch from regular diapers to Pantsy is therefore when your child is crawling and taking their first steps. They are also a great solution for when you are on the go.
For this reason, the smallest diaper pants are usually available in size 8-9 kg. Children reach this weight at around 8 months of age. This is also when rebellion can set in, with children not wanting to be changed and it being difficult to keep them calm on the changing table. You can even put Pantsy on your child while they are running.
Diaper pants are also perfect when children are learning to use the potty independently. They can be used in the first phase of potty training. The child can pull down the pants independently without having to open the Velcro fasteners. Later, they can also put them on themselves. This is also one of the first steps towards independence. It is worth introducing such habits as early as possible. Make certain activities easier for your child. If they can do something themselves, let them.
Standard diapers for babies to start with
Can pants soon completely replace standard diapers? No. Their design is not suitable for caring for small children. Diapers are much easier to put on and take off a child who is lying down. They have convenient Velcro fasteners that allow the diaper to fit perfectly around the child's legs and stomach.
Standard diapers are also available in smaller sizes than pants. They are designed for children weighing 2 kg or more and in version 0 for premature babies. The smallest sizes also have a cutout for the navel, which is useful in the first days of life when the newborn's umbilical cord stump has not yet fallen off.
Both pants and standard diapers for babies are therefore a good choice. Much depends on the age of the child. At the beginning, diapers with Velcro fasteners are the only option – they are more convenient when changing a baby who is lying down. Diaper pants are the ideal solution for mobile, crawling, and already walking children.
